SOURCE: composer's original composition for solo piano | arranged for double bass & piano
COMMENTS: Originated after an excellent arrangement of my gifted student Timothée Methou, this composition, which Johannes Brahms originally wrote for piano solo, gets here a very convincing sounding alternative in the arrangement for double bass and piano. The tonal characteristics of the double bass are fully exploited here, even in the very low register, which is often neglected in solo literature. This adaptation is an ideal introduction to Brahms literature for double bass players. Although an ability to produce superb, resonant tone is a must for the performance of this work (as well as for all other Brahms works), it is much shorter and also technically less difficult than the arrangements of the Brahms sonatas. This edition includes five variations of the solo double bass part, for different scordaturas. In my opinion, it is particularly advantageous to play in the orchestral tuning, ideally on a 5-string with a "high C" string (as, for example, Renaud Garcia Fons does), so as not to miss out the low notes and at the same time to have naturally vibrating instrument in the high register.
