COMMENT: Schubert's first composition in an instrumentation for four double basses. The tale what happened with the score after Schubert sent it to Goethe is impressive, but also quite sad. I have tried several variants within ca 21 years of occasionally performing this piece with double bass quartet (even in a quintet version), but every alteration to the score was actually worse than the original and I went slowly after all tests back to the roots: all marks and dynamics in this score are 100% like in composer's manuscript. It is just a variant for an instrumental ensemble. This short and impressive chamber music piece will be a challenging task for four skillful players.
