NOTE:
Ludwig van Beethoven first encountered the legendary double bassist Domenico Dragonetti in Vienna in the spring of 1799. At the time, Dragonetti was already a musical phenomenon, admired across Europe. Beethoven had heard of his extraordinary ability to perform cello works directly from the original parts and was curious to experience this for himself. They chose this sonata to perform together a few days later—and the rest is history. Double bassists are encouraged to consider using a recommended tuning in fourths with high C string at the top. It not only brings the instrument closer to the “right” sound for the extraordinary experience of performing a masterpiece by one of the greatest composers in history but also allows the double bass to be played more naturally across its full range, from the lowest to the highest positions, making full use of all four strings. The “GDAE tuning version“ is included as a tribute to the great Dragonetti, for study purposes, and for musicians who use alternative tunings.
